I stepped out to lunch today with Hal Hanlin, Design Producer for Rift: Planes of Telara. We didn’t have a lot of time so we went to a little Mexican place close by called Una Mas. We quickly ordered our quesadillas and settled at a nice table outside to have our conversation.
I first asked Hal how he ended up in the game industry. He said that in 1997, he was a system administrator. His wife asked him what he would want to do for a living if money were not a factor. He responded that he wanted to make video games.
About two years later, he saw an ad for a systems administrator with a video game company called VR1 in Boulder. Part of his job there was to oversee the servers for several different MMOs. While he was there, the company had an open design submission process. Hal submitted 3 design proposals. Out of 100 submitted proposals, he had 2 in the top 10! At that point, he was offered a position as a designer. And the rest is history, as you were able to see in his short bio that we posted.
Now, on to your questions for Hal!
Rift: Planes of Telara Producer Adam Gershowitz answers a few questions from the fans on Rift’s official community forums. Without revealing too much information before E3, Adam wanted to address a few subjects the fans have been asking about.
Will Rift: Planes of Telara have a meaningful death penalty?
Adam: There will be penalties for dying in Rift, though calling them “meaningful” is really dependent on who you ask. We are designing death in such a way that adds some risk to the game, but does not necessarily penalize players for taking the occasional gamble. We all need to stretch out our characters from time to time, to see what they can really do.
Will there be forced PvP on PvE servers?
Adam: PvP will be completely consensual on PvE servers. Players will always have the choice on whether or not they wish to participate in PvP. Keeping in mind things like “Attacking other PvP flagged players”, “Entering a PvP flagged area”, and “Attacking other realms PvP flagged NPCs” all count as deciding to participate!
We want to thank all of our fans for asking great questions on the forums! There are still a lot of subjects we can’t really discuss at this point and time, but we will definitely have more for you very soon.
